My Favorite Things…No Soliciting Signs

On school nights, the kids and I are often in pj’s earlier than most people. Especially if Dan is at work.  Curtains are closed.  Porch light is on.  We’re snuggled in for the night.  To the passer by, they would {should} know that the porch light and closed curtains mean “do not knock on my door if you are selling something”. But there are those people who don’t understand those unspoken rules.  So I thought a simple sign might communicate with them better.

I started searching for a ‘no soliciting’ sign.  But I didn’t want a sterile, boring sign like this…

I figured I could paint a sign but didn’t feel overly motivated.  Thanks to ebay, I was able to track down the perfect answer…

 I was tired of answering my door to someone wanting to clean my carpets or selling the sharpest set of knives when I was all ready for bed.  But I didn’t want to discourage the neighborhood kiddo selling wrapping paper or raising money for fifth grade camp from knocking.  I think this sign kindly gets the point across to those visiting my front porch. {And it happens to look cute, too!}

Our door is black so the sign fits right in…

Thankfully, I have noticed a great decrease in the number of late evening knocks on my door, so our little sign is doing it’s job perfectly!!  Thank you ebay!

Can not wait to make one or two or three! Love it!!

  2. Oh this is perfect! I agree with you that I don’t want to discourage our neighborhood kids from coming to sell for school, scouts., etc., but I really don’t want solicitors trying to sell me things at my front door. This is cute, functional, and really explains what you want. Thank you for the idea!

  3. Jen, GREAT idea…been wondering how to navigate this very thing.
    Thank you.

  4. Very cute idea! And the sign is so darn cute as well!

  5. I love it!
    It’s practical…but not Stodgy ~

Years ago–before it was cool to NOT allow smoking anywhere. We were the first people we know to put a NO SMOKING sign in our home.
The Honey had it made for us at Six Flags by one of those wood worker that did engraving while you watched.

NO SMOKING. ‘Cause we said so. ~ The Management

We got some Looks and some Laughs. (the laughers would always ask anyway?! )

  6. Okay, that is so cute! I love it — and I’m glad it seems to be working. ;-)

  7. i love this sign, and i have to ask…do they have to listen to it if you have something like that outside? this summer was so bad, we had to call the township and ask about it being allowed.

    • I think the number of solicitors has declined. We did have one aggressive knocker apparently NOT see my sign. But we just ignored her knock. My feeling is that it works!

  8. I found your link over at seven thirty three. LOVE this sign! Super cute! :D

  9. oh man, does this actually work? the amount of political solicitors I get is INSANE lately, even with my “no soliciting” sign! I have the small sign from home depot. Maybe if I have a larger sign, it’ll get more attention, I’ll be trying this out! I found you through Chic on a Shoestring’s blog. :)

  10. That’s perfect! Great idea!

  11. Oh my gosh you don’t know how bad I need one of these! They’re always ringing the door bell and then the dogs bark and wake up my toddler. Drives me insane! Love this! I never got one before because I didn’t want one of those not-cute signs. I’ll have to make my own! I would love if you shared this at my Throwback Thursday party. I hope to see you there and thanks for sharing!

  12. Very cute!! Stopping by from Serenity Now linky party.

Here is what I shared this week:

  13. Very cute sign! Glad you’ve noticed less traffic.
I manage an apartment complex and we have no trespassing and no solicitors signs all over the place and they still come knocking. When I bring it to their attention, that we have the sign out front about no solicitors – I get the puppy eyed look and the “I’m not soliciting” line. I think some of them don’t even know what the words soliciting/solicitor means.

  14. It’s a great sign.
